15 Ways to Deal with Writer’s Block

Writer’s block is an author’s worst nightmare. This condition zaps away all ideas and creativity that was previously swirling around in your head. It turns a usually fun and relieving task into a long, tedious, and frustrating job. Writer’s block makes writing impossible. Luckily, there is a solution.

Here are 15 ways to deal with writer’s block.

  1. Freewriting
  2. Long-term approach to helping fight writer’s block can be for you to write every single day. Free write every day for at least 10 minutes. Free writing does not have to be a stressful task! Just write about whatever comes to your mind. There is no structure to follow or any topics that you are confined to. Just write something.

  3. remove any distractions
  4. It is best if you turn off the internet (unless it is absolutely necessary) and turn off your phone too, so that you do not have a bunch of distraction and interruptions. I know this all too well, tending to a distraction while in the middle of writing is a sure way to lose your train of thought completely.

  6. Looking back at some of your best work can help get you back into that moment. You can relive the feelings and setting that you had when first writing that piece. This can bring up some new ideas or even something you may have wanted to talk about in the writing that you are rereading.

  8. For some people, music can be very distracting. But for other, it can be a very inspirational outlet to get your gears turning. Find a genre that helps you the most. Whether it is the lyrics or just the instrumental to a song. Feel the music and let your finger do the typing or writing.

  10. Any object can turn into inspiration. Look around, find something to focus on that stands out to you and write about it. You can do that from your writing area or while you are out.

  14. By making an outline, you can go off of that and use it to help you find a structure for your writing. Write down your idea as well as some main point. This will make it much more manageable and less stressful. You can always refer to the outline if you run into any troubles.

  16. When you first wake up in the morning, your brain is at a productivity high. You are still “coming down” from your dreams. When you are dreaming, you are at a peak of creativity. Instead of grabbing your phone, grab a pen and some paper and jot down what comes to mind.

This does not meant taking their ideas. Just observe and see what you like the best about their style of writing and create your own style from there.
